Popeyes reported a 1% systemwide sales decline to $1.503 billion in Q3 2026. Burger King, in contrast, achieved 8.4% U.S. comparable sales growth for the quarter ended September 30, 2026.

Popeyes' U.S. comparable sales dropped 2.2% in the period. The declines, however, moderated relative to the second quarter, when the chain saw a 5.2% erosion. Burger King's performance marked its sixth consecutive quarterly increase.

Brand Performance Contrast

Burger King's strong U.S. growth was accompanied by a 10.6% increase in adjusted operating income, which reached $136 million. Revenue grew 2.3% to $396 million. Popeyes' 2.2% U.S. same-store sales drop was the weakest result among Restaurant Brands International's major brands. Tim Hortons, by comparison, saw Canadian comparable sales increase by 1.8%.

The parent company's International segment also performed well, with adjusted operating income climbing 8.9% to $205 million. Firehouse Subs' adjusted operating income increased 11.1% to $16 million.

Menu and Operational Factors

Popeyes’ sales decline was driven by an underperforming limited-time offer and ongoing menu simplification efforts. Josh Kobza, commenting on menu changes, noted that "wings add to operational complexity." Despite the sales slump, Popeyes saw gains in customer satisfaction across the first three quarters of 2026. Satisfaction with the brand’s core chicken products is at a record high.

Burger King's U.S. business is undergoing a multiyear turnaround focused on improving food and restaurant operations. This foundational work is part of a broader strategy to reclaim market position.

Competitor Growth Drivers

Burger King's performance stems from significant investments in remodels and menu innovation under its 'Reclaim the Flame' initiative. The program includes up to $700 million in investments through 2028. These efforts have yielded clear results. Whopper sales are up double digits year over year, and nugget sales have spiked about 35%.

The chain has refranchised 135 restaurants to date in 2026. Restaurant Brands International aims to finish refranchising the Carrols restaurant system by the end of 2027. Globally, Burger King's comparable sales rose 8.3%, and the brand surpassed 13,000 restaurants outside the U.S. and Canada during the quarter. Popeyes, for its part, crossed the 2,000-restaurant milestone.

Burger King's continued strong performance stays as the strongest-performing brand in Restaurant Brands International's portfolio. Josh Kobza added context, stating, "With volume still well below peak historical levels," indicating room for further growth.
