Zaxbys Sauce Vending Machine Debuts in NYC
Zaxbys launched a sauce vending machine at a competitor's NYC location, offering 12 signature sauces to differentiate itself as Raising Cane's expands its own sauce options.

Zaxbys installed a sauce vending machine at Raising Cane’s Astor Place location in Manhattan this summer. The machine, called The Zax Machine, features 12 signature sauces, a direct contrast to Raising Cane’s primary offering of a single signature sauce. Zaxbys opened its first New York City location on the Upper East Side this month. The installation was created by the agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners.
Zaxbys' NYC Expansion Strategy
Zaxbys made its New York City debut in July 2025 with locations in the Bronx and Manhattan. This marks the chain's entry into its 24th state. The company is targeting 60 new restaurant openings this year as part of this aggressive growth. Raising Cane’s, its key competitor, first opened in New York City in June 2023 with a flagship store in Times Square.
Sauce Innovation as Competitive Differentiation
The vending machine is part of Zaxbys' broader 'Who’s Got the Sauce?' campaign, launched last year. Internal research showed a consumer preference for its multiple sauce options. Chief Marketing Officer Patrick Schwing stated that the brand aims to exaggerate sauces to stand out. He noted that while other places offer chicken tenders with sauce in a monolithic way, Zaxbys sees guests taking two sauces to create their own concoctions, which is a core part of the experience. Creative director AJ Warren highlighted that Zaxbys offers 12 sauces and more than 480 million ways to combine them. Schwing also commented that many great chicken spots are sadly missing the sauce.
Industry Context and Market Position
The broader chain restaurant market has seen slowed sales growth in 2025, according to the Technomic Top 500 report. Reduced consumer dining has impacted the sector, though coffee, beverages, snacks, and chicken categories have continued to thrive. Within that landscape, Zaxbys has grown significantly. It surpassed 1,000 units in 2025 with a 3.7% unit-count increase and a 5.2% sales increase, reaching over $2.8 billion in sales. This performance places it within the top 35 chain restaurants.
Raising Cane’s reported even stronger growth metrics for 2025, with a 10.3% unit-growth increase and 10.6% sales growth. It operates approximately 990 locations with over $5.5 billion in sales. During the vending machine campaign, Zaxbys offered social media codes on its @realzaxbys account for rewards on chicken items and sauces. Zaxbys Rewards members also received exclusive offers for a limited time. CEO Bernard Acoca called the New York entry an exciting milestone in the chain’s growth story, describing New York as one of the most influential food cities in the world. The installation served as a bold, sauce-centric introduction for the Southern chicken chain, leveraging its loyal sauce following to carve a niche in a competitive market.
