Taco Bell is launching a Duo Habanero sauce globally on October 6, partnering with language app Duolingo to rebrand National Taco Day as Global Taco Day. Starting that day, U.S. Customers get a free packet of the tangy, fruity habanero sauce with every Doritos Locos Taco purchase while supplies last, with additional packets costing twenty cents each.

Rewards members can unlock one month of Super Duolingo for free from October 1 through October 6 via a code in the Taco Bell app. Codes must be redeemed by November 15 and remain active for 30 days after activation. The sauce and promotions will be available at participating restaurants in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, India, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Offers outside the U.S. Vary by market, but the sauce is free with a qualifying item.

Packets of the new sauce will feature taco-inspired phrases in nine languages: English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese, German, Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese. Internationally, packet assortments will reflect the native language and popular languages Duolingo users are learning in each market. Amy Ellis Durini, chief marketing and strategy officer for Taco Bell International, noted the cultural connection. "There’s something pretty special about a word that can be understood across languages and cultures," Durini said. Taco Bell notes that the word 'taco' is the same in more than 30 languages.

Limited-edition merchandise and experiences

The partnership includes 1,000 limited-edition plushies of Duo the owl wearing a custom Taco Bell uniform and mini headphones. In the U.S., Taco Bell Rewards members can attempt to claim one plushie on the app's Tuesday Drops page on October 6 starting at 2 p.m. Pacific Time while supplies last. Fans in the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Australia, China, and Spain will also have opportunities to get the plush through local activations.

A Duolingo x Taco Bell restaurant takeover is scheduled for October 6 at 976 6th Ave. In New York City. Fans may also see Duo appear in restaurants in Mumbai, Toronto, and Shanghai.

Global expansion and cultural alignment

This campaign marks Taco Bell's push to take its National Taco Day global. The chain has doubled its store count in global markets in the past few years and is dedicating more resources, including marketing dollars, to its international business. The collaboration leverages Duolingo's massive reach; the app surpassed 50 million daily active users last year. Luis Restrepo of Taco Bell emphasized the day's broader meaning. "National Taco Day is about more than just food. It’s about the shared love of tacos and the connections they create between people," Restrepo said.

Fan engagement and social response

Early reactions on social media have been humorous and excited. One Instagram user wrote, 'The Duo I didn’t know I needed!' while another joked, 'Economy so tough, even Duo has to get a second job.' Some users referenced Duo's famously persistent notifications, with one commenting, 'I hope none of the employees forgot their streak.' Another fan wrote, 'Taco Bell, why would you make me afraid to enter your hallowed halls?' The collaboration is designed to motivate people to keep their language learning streaks going.

Fans can attempt to claim a limited-edition plushie via the Taco Bell app on October 6 starting at 2 p.m. PT while supplies last.
