Marina Beach South Asian Bistro Opens in San Francisco
Marina Beach, a tiny South Asian bistro and natural wine bar, has opened in San Francisco's Marina district. The restaurant, run by owner Murugan Gunasekaran and chef Lucas Morris-Lopez, offers a small, frequently changing menu in an intimate, date-night-friendly space.

Marina Beach has opened as a permanent restaurant in San Francisco's Marina district. The small South Asian bistro, which began as a pop-up, started service in June 2026 and remains difficult to book three months later, according to a firsthand report from Eater SF.
Owner Murugan Gunasekaran named the spot for his family's origins in South India. Chef Lucas Morris-Lopez, formerly of Mexico City's Masala y Maiz, leads the kitchen. The restaurant occupies a compact ground-floor space on Buchanan Street.
The Vibe and Space
The restaurant is notably small. Diners enter to a view of the two-person kitchen team and a few high-top tables. Four bar seats offer a front-row view of cooking, while a side room fits a few more tables by street-facing windows.
Marina Beach has quickly gained a reputation as an ideal date-night spot. The intimate scale suits couples, though groups larger than four would find it cramped. Tabletop candles and dim lighting enhance the cozy, cave-like atmosphere, which is paired with minimalist concrete decor.
What to Order
The menu is concise and changes approximately every two weeks based on seasonal ingredients. Determined diners could order everything, but careful selection allows for a more budget-conscious meal. Entrees are the priciest items, while other dishes range from $12 to $24.
A standout vegetable dish is the verkadalai sundal for $14. This version features tender-crisp green beans with herbs and a bright sauce, presenting a Northern California take on the traditional boiled peanut preparation.
The albacore and potato samosas cost $16. Served very hot and crisp, they come topped with a generous portion of golden plum chutney that cuts through the richness of the fish and potato.
During an early September visit, two entrees were available. The halibut with panchai curry, priced at $36, was favored over the $34 duck with red wine jus. The report noted the tender fish, topped with fried makrut lime leaves and resting on summer squash, luxuriated in the green curry sauce.
For dessert, the strawberry and black pepper ice cream costs $8. The texture and strawberry flavor were praised, though the reviewer desired a stronger black pepper presence. Online reviews suggest the ice cream and sorbets are particularly popular.
Drinks and Details
The brief drinks list focuses on natural wines. Glasses range from $12 to $16, with bottles around $60. One reported pairing was a Chablis from Thomas Tixier for $67.
