Chef Sarah Thompson has won the James Beard Award for Best Chef Southwest, a historic first for Las Vegas. Thompson, who runs the fine-dining Mexican restaurant Casa Playa at the Wynn Las Vegas, is the first chef based in the city to win in 15 years and the first female chef from a Las Vegas Strip restaurant to earn the distinction.
She discussed the win and her career in an interview with Nation’s Restaurant News. Thompson’s career began in New York City kitchens like Cosme and Marea, which were run by strong female leaders. She described this early experience as a fortunate accident. “I didn't seek it out at all. It was all by chance, and I feel very fortunate that that was how I came up,” Thompson said.
A Shift in Las Vegas Culture
Upon moving to Las Vegas in 2020, Thompson encountered a much more male-dominated restaurant industry. When she began building her team for Casa Playa, she found that female chefs actively sought her out. Thompson stated that assembling a team with significant female representation was not a deliberate strategy. Instead, talented cooks and leaders approached her.
We just had a lot of female leaders come to me and a lot of really talented cooks who really wanted to grow and be represented, she told the publication. The result is a kitchen staff that is 50% women. Thompson has observed an evolution in the Las Vegas dining scene since her arrival, and her award is a part of that change.
The Impact of Recognition
Thompson expressed deep pride in Casa Playa, a restaurant she built from the ground up. She highlighted the team of young, ambitious cooks and chefs who work with her. The prolonged lack of James Beard recognition for Las Vegas made the win particularly significant for the local culinary community.
She sees the award as a powerful signal to aspiring professionals in the city. “Having us up there and showing all of these young culinary professionals that this can happen.” Thompson said. The win demonstrates that Las Vegas restaurants can compete at the highest national level.
Building a Representative Team
The chef’s experience shows a gradual shift in restaurant kitchen culture, especially within the high-stakes environment of the Las Vegas Strip. Her path from New York’s female-led kitchens to leading a diverse team in Nevada illustrates changing dynamics. Thompson’s historic win provides a concrete example of success for underrepresented groups in the industry.
She finished the interview reflecting on the moment. The achievement is a milestone for her restaurant and for the city’s entire dining scene.
