Chipotle Opens First Asian Restaurant in Seoul
Chipotle has opened its first Asian location in Seoul, South Korea, in partnership with Sangmidang Holdings. The fast-casual chain plans two more Korean outlets this year and a Singapore debut in 2027.

Chipotle has opened its first restaurant in Asia. The fast-casual Mexican chain's debut location on the continent is in Seoul, South Korea, operated through a partnership with local firm Sangmidang Holdings.
The new restaurant is situated at 423 Gangnam-daero in Seoul's Seocho-gu district. According to the company, this opening establishes South Korea as a reference market for future growth across Asia. Chipotle stated it selected South Korea due to its highly engaged consumers, sophisticated restaurant culture, and strong appreciation for authenticity and ingredient quality.
Expansion Strategy and Leadership Comments
CEO Scott Boatwright called Asia a significant growth opportunity. He cited strong regional demand for variety, convenience, and fresh food. Boatwright said South Korea was an ideal market to introduce the brand to Asia, expressing confidence in its potential for growth.
Scott Boatwright stated, "Asia represents a significant growth opportunity for Chipotle, with strong demand for variety, convenience, and real food prepared fresh and served fast."
The Seoul location will serve Chipotle's standard menu, including burritos, bowls, tacos, and salads. Operations will be managed by S&C Restaurants Holdings, a joint venture under Sangmidang Holdings. The partnership plans to open two more Chipotle locations in South Korea before the end of this year. A market entry into Singapore is scheduled for 2027.
Partnership and Market Anticipation
The joint venture agreement with Sangmidang Holdings was signed one year ago. Sangmidang Holdings brings over 80 years of food business experience to the partnership. The company also operates other brands like Paris Baguette and Passion 5 in the market. It has a history of introducing international brands to South Korea, including Shake Shack and Dunkin'.
Hee-soo Hur, President and Chief Vision Officer of Sangmidang Holdings, said Chipotle offers a distinctive dining experience centered on choice and quality. Hur noted there had been tremendous anticipation for the brand's arrival in the country.
Chipotle's Global Footprint
This move is part of Chipotle's broader international expansion. The chain first expanded outside the United States into Canada in 2008. Subsequent entries included the United Kingdom in 2010, France in 2012, and Germany in 2013. Chipotle entered the Middle East in April 2024 through an agreement with Alshaya Group. The company also recently opened its first location in Mexico.
CEO Scott Boatwright has previously stated the company's objective is to become a global powerhouse. The Seoul opening marks a key step in that Asian strategy.
